FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What to expect during your appointment?
To make sure you get the best experience and the care you deserve, we would always start a consultation by getting to know more about what brought you to the clinic. We will take an extensive history, to ensure we really understand what your concerns are and how it is affecting your daily life and general health.
If you have had any tests done prior to your visit, such as previous scans or X-rays, blood tests etc, feel free to bring them in, so that we have a complete grasp of your story. We will also discuss the rest of your general health, any previous injuries or surgeries you might have had in the past.
After this, we will move on to a full physical assessment, which will include some basic movements, Orthopaedic tests and a standing assessment of some body landmarks. Once completed, we will talk you through our findings and educate you on the root cause of the issue you have been experiencing.
We will then discuss what we can do in terms of treatment, and go though a reasonable management plan that suits you and your lifestyle. This will also include some clinical rehabilitation exercises to help you in your recovery between consultations. We would then proceed to the Osteopathic treatment, and towards the end go through what is next to help you heal and recover.

Which means we take into consideration your lifestyle, age, gender, genetics, diet, sleep, work, physical activity, family dynamics, mental health, emotional health, beliefs & expectations, social support, relationships, social dynamics etc.

Are there differences in Osteopathy?
Yes. Depending on the country, Osteopathic Medicine (Osteopathy) is taught & delivered differently.
For example, the Australian, European & the American model of Osteopathic Medicine have different elements to them.
However,
Classical Osteopathy is heavily rooted in the origins, teachings & founding philosophy/principles of Osteopathy developed by Dr A.T Still (MD), which looks at the person, their condition, the body and how everything is connected and interrelated as a whole.
There is no generic formula for treatment, instead each person, each treatment is assessed and treated on an individual basis.
and is generally able to deal with more stubborn & extensive range of conditions.

What is visceral Osteopathy?
All of your organs are in suspension within your musculoskeletal system through multiple complex ligamentous and fascial connections.
Visceral osteopaths are able to assess the mobility of the viscera and treat these connections. Visceral techniques are subtle techniques that will be implemented to reduce any tightness or restrictions present in the organs and their attachments.

What is cranial Osteopathy?
Different to Biodynamic Osteopathy and cranio-sacral therapy, Cranial Osteopathy is a more gentle form of Osteopathic Treatment that can be used to treat people from all ages. It was created by Dr William Sutherland, and is based on the treatment of the cranial mechanism (also called Involuntary Mechanism).
Cranial Osteopaths understand that the joints between the bones of the skull are specifically designed to allow them with the subtle ability to move and that the skull has normal mobility during health, and displays restriction in response to physical and emotional trauma or other health conditions.
Dr. Sutherland found that the cranial mechanism was the prime mechanism behind the body's metabolism, anatomy and physiology, and that if disturbed, the body's ability to self-heal and repair is diminished.

What is the difference between Osteopathy, Physiotherapy & Chiropractic?
A very common question actually.
The differences can be found in each profession's philosophy/principles, the subjects taught at university, and how they view, assess, diagnose and treat different issues.
Osteopaths are trained in providing General Medical Health assessments, diagnoses, disease screening, and
focus on the health of the entire body, rather than just the injured or affected part. They look at how your skeleton, joints, muscles, nerves, circulatory system, connective tissue and internal organs function as a whole body unit and help improve its function by correcting the overall structure.
Sometimes Visceral Osteopathy, Cranial Osteopathy, biodynamics/biodynamic Osteopathy can be incorporated in the Osteopathic treatment too.
NOTE: Cranio-sacral Therapy is different to the Cranial Osteopathy Method.
Chiropractors tend to focus mainly (but not exclusively) on the alignment of the spine as the primary means to relieve pain by preventing any compromise of the nervous system, with their main tool of treatment being spinal joint manipulation.
Physiotherapists have a great focus on exercise, movement, and rehabilitation, often following injury or surgery, or when dealing with a physical disability, while their manual hands-on application is minimal.

What is the difference between Acupuncture & Dry Needling?
There are some similarities, such as using the same thin needles and the way the needle is delivered, however, the origin, aim and theory of techniques are quite different.
Acupuncture is derived from Traditional Chinese Medicine and it was designed to reduce pain by restoring the energy flow of the body or “chi". This energy travels through to body via meridians, each linked to individual organs.
Dry Needling however, can be performed by a variety of healthcare professionals, including Osteopaths. It is used to help reducing muscular pain, and can also be applied to ligaments, fascia and tendons.
The needles would be placed on specific myofascial trigger points to relieve pain and assist in the reduction in tightness and physical stress on the areas of the body that are treated.
We recommend that you see someone that is highly trained to perform Dry Needling to reduce the risk of potential severe injury.
